Good for you! You’ve decided that 2016 is the year that you will do what it takes to have a beautifully straight smile. Now the only question is what kind of orthodontic treatment will you choose? Of course, the right choice may depend on your individual orthodontic needs. There is, however, some leeway. Dr. Dilolli at Virginia Dentistry by Design in Herndon, VA, offers three different kinds of orthodontics: Invisalign®, traditional braces and instant orthodontics. One of them is sure to give you the dazzling results you want!
Invisalign
For adults and older teens, the idea of having a mouthful of metal brackets and wires for any length of—regardless of the payoff—can be daunting. Fortunately, Dr. Dilolli offers a viable alternative. Invisalign uses clear plastic aligners to gradually move your teeth into their proper position. As a certified Invisalign practitioner, Dr. Dilolli works closely with the Invisalign lab to fabricate your customized aligners. Combining x-rays, impressions and photographs with the precision of a computer-generated 3D representation of your mouth and bite, your aligners are designed to methodically move each tooth. After about 12 to 18 months of wearing Invisalign aligners daily, you’ll have a straight smile.
Traditional Orthodontics
For traditional braces, Herndon residents come to Dr. Dilolli. These braces are most effective for treating a patient who not only needs to improve the appearance of his or her smile, but a malocclusion, as well. With traditional braces, metal brackets are cemented to your teeth and an arch wire fits through slots in the brackets. Elastic bands keep the wire in place as it applies the pressure that ultimately moves your teeth. Treatment usually requires approximately two years: the first year to move the crowns of your teeth and the second year to move the roots into an upright position.
Instant Orthodontics
In truth, instant orthodontics is not orthodontics at all. This treatment combines a few cosmetic dentistry treatments—dental bonding, porcelain veneers and dental crowns—to give the impression of orthodontics. The result, of course, is a beautiful smile with the appearance of straight teeth. Dental bonding allows Dr. Dilolli to reshape a tooth that is chipped or slightly cracked. Porcelain veneers are sheaths of dental porcelain that are bonded to the facial side of teeth in your smile zone. They’re perfect for correcting a few crooked, misshaped, cracked or irregularly spaced teeth. Finally a dental crown, which is normally used to repair a damaged tooth, can be used to make a crooked tooth appear to be straight.
